The first case of Sickle cell was reported by James Herrick in 1910. This was an African American case studying in Dental College, Chicago, USA.  Over more than 100 years, SCA is proved as the commonest inherited blood disorder of Hemoglobin. Every year 3,00,000 babies are born with Sickle cell anemia across the World. The prevalence is high in USA, UK, Asia. India also has high prevalence of Sickle Cell Anemia(SCA). Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha states has reported 10-40% prevalence. There is a need to take lifelong treatment for person who has Sickle cell disease. For a carrier state Sickle cell trait ‘no’ treatment is necessary.

Considering high prevalence and need to develop facility for laboratory diagnosis, effective management and prevention Sickle cell treatment & Research activity were initiated by Shishudeep Hospital under visionary leadership of Dr.Jyotish Patel(Chairman, Vision Medical Foundation for Rural Health & Research) & Dr.Bharati Patel(Secretary, Vision Medical Foundation for Rural Health & Research) since 1989.

Pioneering work like village surveys, diagnostic camps, health education seminars, publication of literature & research papers has helped Society, Government, Doctors, Healthcare provider in various dimensions.

The state of art facility under single roof “Shishudeep Multi-speciality Hospital” is a model of care, first in India, “Sickle Cell Super-speciality Healthcare Institute”.

Sickle cell care team provides facility of laboratory diagnosis, treatment for all cases including critical care. For prevention counselling facility, prenatal diagnosis, pre post marriage advice is made available. Specialized services are made available for surgical needs of SCA especially Hip joint replacement, Spleen & Gall Bladder removal.

As a result of World Class Facility, the survival rate of hospitalized cases with critical condition is more than 99%. With advanced treatment, more cases are reaching 4^th decade and more.
